With roughly 12 percent of Americans funding a 0 million health club and gym industry, people are going to the gym daily to get in shape and maintain a healthy lifestyle. And while people expect to leave the gym feeling better than when they arrived, there is a significant risk of injury when working out, from the treadmill to the racquetball court.

In 2009 the Consumer Products Safety Commissions reported there were more than 50,000 cases of people visiting the emergency room because of workout equipment and workout-related injuries. This includes falling off treadmills or exercise balls, tripping and falling on jump ropes or other machines and dropping heavy weights on legs and feet.

How to Avoid an Accident

There is always a chance for an accident, but you can significantly reduce your risk of injury by acting responsibly and safely in the weight room or other areas of a health club. People who constantly check their smartphones or watch television while working out have a higher risk of injury because they aren't paying attention. You can help stay safe in the gym by following these tips:

Never exercise without warming up first. Stretching and jogging are great ways to reduce your chance of injury while working out. Always know how to operate a machine properly before exercising on it. Know your limits and be aware of when your body is getting tired. Many injuries happen when your body is fatigued and you try to do more than you should.

There are cases when injuries happen because of gym workers neglecting damaged equipment or slippery surfaces from water spills. Guests should be sure to report problems to the gym staff in order to help reduce the risk of injury.
